What's the difference between the base tiers and AI add-ons?
Base tiers (Free, Pro, Premium) give you all the data, budgeting, and analytics tools — no AI required. AI add-ons (AI Coach, AI Pro) layer on conversational intelligence and smart features. You choose whether AI ever touches your data.
Do I need an AI add-on?
No. Pro and Premium give you forecasting, trends, and budget adherence stats using rules-based math — no AI involved. The AI add-on is purely optional for users who want chat, explanations, and personalized recommendations.
How does the AI coach work?
The AI Coach add-on uses your transaction history and spending patterns to give personalized advice. Ask it anything about your finances in plain English. It explains budget overspend, suggests adjustments, and answers financial questions based on your real data.
How does the cash flow forecast work?
The forecast (Pro feature) projects your next 30 days using your average monthly income, budget totals, and recurring bill patterns — pure math, no AI. It also shows budget adherence stats: how often you've met your budget over the last 12 months.
Can my partner and I budget together?
Yes. All tiers include shared expense splits. Premium adds full shared household budgeting — a combined view of spending, shared budgets, and partner access to the dashboard.
Is self-hosted Kompass free?
Yes. Self-host with Docker and every feature is included with no subscription. Set NEXT_PUBLIC_DEPLOYMENT_MODE=selfhosted (the default) and all tiers are unlocked. AI features still require an OPENROUTER_API_KEY.
Is my data private?
Yes. Your transaction data lives in a database you control. If you use an AI add-on on hosted Kompass, your financial context is sent to an LLM to generate advice — but never stored or shared externally. You control whether AI is involved at all.
Can I try features before paying?
Self-host Kompass with Docker and every feature is unlocked at no cost. On hosted Kompass, the free tier covers core budgeting, accounts, and net worth tracking so you can explore before upgrading.
